For example, if you have a 500 GB drive in Mac, use a 1 TB external drive for Time Machine.

Further, it is not recommended to use the drive for anything else, except Time Machine. How to Backup Your Mac with Time Machine
Step #1. Connect the external storage device to your Mac.
